Diabetes in the South Asian Community is on the Rise.
Project Advancing Care Together (ACT) under Sikh Aid Gears up by engaging through Health workshops.

Flushing, New York- UNITED SIKHS conducted a Health workshop at the Flushing Sikh Center Gurdwara Saheb. The primary focus was on educating the community about Diabetes, specifically, the link between diabetes and heart disease, and the leading cause of death in the South Asian Community.

Blood Pressure screenings were performed, from 12 Noon to 2 PM, to detect undiagnosed hypertension, another common silent killer, along with diabetes, in the South Asian community. Almost a hundred members of the sangat(congregation) had their blood pressures checked, and were counseled on diabetes, hypertension, and other Cardiovascular risk factors. Dr Harmeet Singh Narula, Endocrinologist at Stony Brook University, addressed more than 250 members of the sangat using a powerpoint presentation, to help them understand the link between diabetes and heart disease, and the need for routine annual preventive health visits for blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol screenings.

ACT’s series of workshops has been planned by Dr Jogesh Kaur, Pediatrics, Jamaica Hospital, Dr. Harmeet Singh, and Dr Jasjeet Kaur, Psychiatrist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, facilitated by Raminder Kaur and Arvind Kaur from UNITED SIKHS. Volunteers S Tejdeep Singh, NYU Dental School, and Dr Maneet Kaur Narula, Stony Brook, participated in this endeavor.

The mission of the these Health Workshops is two-fold :
1. educate immigrant communities on various health conditions to empower them to make good healthcare decisions for themselves, and hence help eliminate healthcare disparities.
2. improve the access to care, by identifying local resources available to the community

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 180 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030. In 2005, an estimated 1.1 million dies from diabetes. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle-income countries. Almost half of diabetes deaths occur in people under the age of 70 years; 55% of diabetes deaths are in women. World Health Organization (WHO) projects that diabetes deaths will increase by more than 50% in the next 10 years without urgent action. Most notably, diabetes deaths
are projected to increase and by over 80% in upper-middle income countries between 2006 and 2015.
Dr. Harmeet Singh, said, "Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are silent killers: they are responsible for the high risk of heart disease and stroke in our community. It is extremely important that our community understands the link between diabetes and heart disease, so they treat their diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol aggressively. Today's program is an important first step towards improving the healthcare of our community"

Dr. Jasjeet Kaur and Dr. Jogesh Kaur conducted blood-pressure checkups.
Himmat Singh, Chairman of the Gurdwara Saheb said, “Such workshops are very much needed and helpful to the community members. More such workshops are required”.

Arvind Kaur, UNITED SIKHS healthcare co-coordinator, said, “We thank all volunteers, Harpreet Singh of New York City Keertan Group and all those who assisted to make this workshop a success”.

Tea

I have just read that tea holds a lot of protection for the heart but if we drink it with milk in it this protection does not work at all because components of milk kill important drugs of tea. I love Masala tea but i will drink one cup of tea without milk every day from now. Also i just read that traditional Indian spices are very healthy.

The fault is our own.

Brother TSNagra,I agree simplicity of Gurdwara food should be the norm because that was exactly how the Gurus started the prathaa of Langar 500 years ago.But the modern day Sikhs have corrupted it to lavish and expensive feasts. However it remains to be said that we should not try to change or stop the old established fundamental Maryadas of Sikhi just because it is OUR own fault that we are obese or diabetic, etc.I know sometimes diabetes etc are genetic or unexplained, but at the same time it is also known that our lifestyle is responsible to a greater extent. So let's not try to change/blame the Guru's traditions, instead let us change/blame ourselves.

Stop the sugar craze

Hi, I have been meaning to myself bring up the issue of Kra parshad switching from sugar to splenda. I personally have diabetes and I know what I go through every time a bhai ji hands me a hand full of butter dripping high in sugar parshad in a gurudwara on Sundays. I do not really understand why the Sikh community or even the Indian community in general have so much dairy products and sugar products in our religious institutions when so many of us are diabetic and lactose intolerant. In India things are different they are natural and there is plenty of walking here it is the complete opposite in the US. I have been meaning to take step one which is to replace the sugar in parshad with splenda in the local gurudwaras. I think the best method of implementing health living in our community is an established sites like Sikhnet’s need to have a special section on just diabetes so it can be shown to people coming to the website that it is a very important and growing issue with in the community. I am not talking about a link hidden 10 links down but something on the front page. I think once people are aware of the seriousness of the issue other things will fall into place naturally. By the way for the non-diabetics in America, Americans are not fat because of McDonalds Americans are fat because of access sugar. One of the benefits for me was when I got diabetes I lost 25lbs because I stopped eating sugar 25lbs!!!! I still eat meat and have not gained an inch. I am not promoting meat eating just making a comment. Go to your local Target store and there is a row dedicated to cookies and candy read the sugar per serving and what is considered a serving I am surprised that all of America is not diabetic yet. My doctor says it is genetic and I asked him how long have we known about diabetes in its present form? His reply not more then a couple of generations. I asked when did the epidemic really start? Well in the last couple of generations. Lets see what have we done in the last couple of generations, switched from labor jobs to cubicles, given 3rd world countries stress full calling center jobs, given them steroid based technology for making farms produce faster, added corn surp to soda, increased processed food consumption, added chemicals to make food last longer on shelves, made round tomatoes square, made a 6" banana 12", made cows which are only bread for meat, not to be racist but isn't it strange when an Asian family in America first generation has a kid in America he she grows to be 1ft taller then the parents? The list just keeps going and they say its genetic?

Modern thinking.

Wow wonder ful thinking so lets open mcdonalds in front or nearby every gurudwara kids are going to be so happy and this way they like to go gurudwara so from today we all punjabis have to stop eating rotis because they are full of sugar?you guys know the study of mcdonalds you dont know who did this study by mcdonalds itself or person paid by mcdonalds?but i bet you never did study about parshad where this come from?go and learn first i bet no body going to sick after eating two or three spoon of parshad in a week or twice a week.so before saying any thing about parshad we all have to saw our innerself first we dont have to blame our mistakes to anothers we our self are problem makers guruji never say run behind the maya and we all are still runing and creating problems for our self and blaming on another things so we have to change our life style that we are not able to change because we are modern.now you are talking like real american we have nukes so no body need that i have problem so change the way we are making the parshad.lets first see our self brother.we born and raised with milk, butter and lassi and we never going to die with these things i bet.HAN JAT PUNJABI DOSTO SANU MANN PUNJABI HON DA and punjabi always live with these things.MAY WHEGURU JI GIVE US SUMAAT.

Start at home Make it simple

This is not the first study. There have been studies earlier about health issues in south asian community. I see most of the Gurudwaras in US serve sweets and fried food liberely. There are 3-4 dishes in every langar. Most of the cooking is done in butter. Let us start making langer simple. Roti, daal and fruits. Simplicity will help. The whole simplicity concept is going out of sikhi. Every thing is elaborate it may be marriage, langar at Gurudwara, gurpurab celebration, gurudwara building, birthday party you name it we just make it lavish. Sarbat da bhalla.
